Fall Comfort Food Found Around Grand Rapids

As the cold season approaches, I begin to yearn for food that will warm my insides. Hot cocoa, soup, grilled cheese, hot coffee, pastries, waffles, and crepes to name a few. My mouth waters just thinking about them. I love food as much as the next person, but when your cold exterior is melted by the warm liquid of hot cocoa trickling down your throat it’s just a whole other experience that I gladly look forward to come this Fall season.

Grand Rapids is the perfect city to find those cozy meals. Many restaurants offer takeout so doesn’t it sound wonderful to grab a cup of hot cocoa and cuddle up with a blanket and a book on your front porch? Or one morning bring home crepes for you and your family and eat close to the fireplace as your family watches Hocus Pocus? But if you are looking to experience Fall in Grand Rapids firsthand then I recommend staying and dining in. Most restaurants in Grand Rapids are suited to give you a relaxing and cozy experience during this Fall weather. And what could be better than cozying up with a book in Brown Butter Creperie and having the sweet scents of crepes and roasting coffee envelop you? Sounds like heaven to me.

Bakeries Perfect for that Fall Sweet Tooth

Nantucket Baking Company located on Lyon Street next to Martha’s Vineyard is the perfect pastry stop. The aroma of fresh baked bread and yummy treats wafts out on the sidewalk as you enter their petite and adorable bakery. In front of you stands piles and piles of chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, molasses, and peanut butter cookies while on the other side baguettes and ciabattas cascade off shelves. It is the purest form of carb heaven. I love a good molasses or monster cookie as well as a scone or croissant and wow do they just melt in your mouth, I tell you. I have never seen such variety. I am excited to see what Fall themed pastries they bring in. I am a sucker for pumpkin bread, so I cannot wait.

Le Bon Macaron on Cherry Street is also perfect for satisfying that sweet tooth. Le Bon Macaron offers a wide variety of flavors for macarons. They are also the prettiest thing you will ever see, so it’s a little sad when you can’t help but devour them. If you love taking pictures of your food than Le Bon is the perfect place to stop and grab that Instagram photo. Their flavors are heavenly and to top it off their Fall flavors are out and sound delicious! Pumpkin, maple walnut, apple cinnamon, chai, and pumpkin cheesecake? Yes please.

Coffee Spots that will Warm Your Soul

When choosing a café to visit this Fall this should be your criteria: good coffee, great vibes, and an amazingly cozy atmosphere. One of many coffee shops that checks off that list is Lantern Coffee Bar and Lounge. Located downtown off Commerce Avenue you can find it sitting on the corner in the middle of the entertainment district. Lantern brings you right in as you are welcomed into a loft styled aesthetic with moody lighting and dark brick. Their atmosphere makes your eyes heavy with weariness, but their coffee is ready to kick you into gear. It’s a great place to grab a cup of coffee and settle into a good book or get that work done that has been sitting in your to-do list for the past week!

Outside Coffee Co. is the exact opposite of Lantern. While Lantern resides inside tucked into an old brick building. Outside Coffee takes a different spin on the idea of “stopping to grab a coffee”. Outside Coffee works out of a small bus located on Wealthy Street inside a fenced-in square that is surrounded by fire pits, hammocks, shrubs, twinkling lights, and outdoor seating. It is truly the best outdoor coffee experience. Bundle up in a hat and scarf and take your dog for a walk along Wealthy while taking the in crisp Fall air and changing leaves. Then stop by Outside Coffee and grab one of their delicious drinks or toasts and enjoy the beauty of the Fall weather while lounging in one of their hammocks!

The Perfect Soup and Grilled Cheese Combo that will Blow Your Mind

Uncle Cheetah’s Soup Shop by far is a winner for when it comes to the best soup in Grand Rapids. Everyday their menu changes for which soups are being offered and every day the flavors are just as unique and delicious as the day before. Pair that with one of their grilled cheeses or sliders. I recommend the Old Goat for their grilled cheese! I am bias towards goat cheese though, so I apologize if it doesn’t hit that perfect spot for you as it does for me. Uncle Cheetah’s has 139 soup combinations and every day they rotate through 12 of them. I love all of their soups, but I love a good soup with either broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, or just a bunch of cheese and they have so many flavor combinations with those bases!

Corelife Eatery is another great place to stop and get soup, broth, or a salad. Here they are highly focused on healthy living so of course their broths are bone broths and made in store! Corelife has two locations in the Grand Rapids area. One in Breton Village and the second resides in Grandville. I love Corelife. Their tomato basil and broccoli cheddar soup is savory and good for soul while their broth bowls cure you of any Fall sicknesses. They have great flavor combinations perfect for any vegetarians or vegans and if you’re into spicy then Corelife can give you just that!

Brunch for that Chilly, Crisp Morning

Here we go. My favorite by far. At Brown Butter Creperie and Cafe located in Eastown off Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids, you can find sweet, delicious smells curling from between the slats of their iconic pink door. The building itself is unique, resembling a quaint Swedish windmill, but inside it takes the persona of a French Creperie from its alluring music to its themed menu. As the seasons change so does the creperie. It kicks aside its summer specials and brings in vibrant, rich fall delicacies including spiced apple cider and an cinnamon apple strudel crepe, which features sautéed cinnamon apples, homemade caramel sauce, oat crumble, and whip cream. Brown Butter can cater to any of your mouth watering needs, because not only does it offer an abundance of sweet crepes but also savory, as well as waffles, and a full espresso bar. So, when in Grand Rapids and in need of comfort food during fall’s chilly mornings, Brown Butter Creperie and Cafe can envelope you in all those warm fuzzy autumn feelings.
