Declutter Your Home in a Few Easy Steps!
While spending so much time at home, it’s easy to just kick back and watch TV all day. But what about tackling that “To-Do” List that you just never had time for before? I’m sure decluttering your junk drawer, decluttering your closet, or just your home in general is somewhere on that list. With the help of Laura Forbes Carlin, the author of Clutter-free Parenting, you can declutter any area on your “To-Do” list in just one day! Laura Forbes Carlin’s Declutter Process in Just 4 Steps
Step 1: Pick an Area
The first step is picking an area that you want to declutter! Whether that’s an area that causes extra emotional stress to your lives, is messy and overwhelming or just takes up too much of your time to look for things!
Step 2: Take Everything Out
The second step is to take everything out of the area and see what you actually have in there. This will allow you to become aware of what you actually have, find anything you lost and start with an overall clean slate.
Step 3: Clean the Area
Step three gives you the chance to disinfect and deep clean that area that was full of stuff previously, so you don’t have to worry about trying to clean it later with your items in the way.
Step 4: Is it Loved or Useful?
This final step is where all the hard work comes into play! Laura defines “clutter” as “anything that is not loved or useful.” With that being said, anything that is loved and useful gets to go back into that area and anything that is not doesn’t serve a purpose in your life anymore! Those items that are no longer needed can be separated into piles, such as a donate pile, a throw away/recycle pile, a sell pile, a pile with items that need to be relocated or any other pile you can think of. The loved and useful items get put back into the original area in an organized way!

More Decluttering Tips
Make a decluttering checklist. When you write down the exact areas that need to be decluttered, you have an idea of where to start. One way to create this list to imagine you are visiting your home for the first time. Think about your first impressions and what areas need the most work. Checking areas off that list will also help you feel accomplished and motivated!
Emotionally prepare yourself beforehand to get rid of a lot of items that you no longer use or cherish.
Take before and after pictures. This might sound a little silly at first, but seeing the transformation firsthand will show you how clean and organized every area in your home could look with a little time and motivation!
Start with a short period of time at the beginning. If you’re not used to decluttering or haven’t done it before, get yourself in the right mindset and allow yourself to build up some momentum without getting overwhelmed right at the beginning.
As long as items are still in good condition, you can donate them! A bonus is that you get a receipt for your donation and use it as a tax write-off!
A lot more items can be recycled than you thought. Before throwing those items away, check the bottom of the item to see if it can be recycled. Bonus points for helping the environment in the process!
After you have cleaned your specific area, try to keep it clean and maintain order! Using things like clear containers/bins/boxes, shelf dividers, and mesh storage bags allows you to keep things organized but also giving you the opportunity to visually see what you still have.
