Stressed Out?

Fall is here and you know what that means…school is in full swing! Yes, it’s that time of the year to get back into the chaos of waking up early, homework, quizzes, exams, extra curriculars, social lives, and whatever else you busy bees have on your plate. With that being said, if you find yourself overwhelmed and stressed out, I’ve got a couple things that can help you unwind and destress right in the comforts of your home!


Got a yoga mat handy? Go ahead and sprawl that baby out! If you are lacking a mat, no worries! Just plop yourself down on a nice rug or carpet. I know what you’re thinking- “Well, what if I don’t have a rug or carpet in my home?” I’d say I hope the weather is nice, now go find a patch of grass! I know, I know, no grass patch? Just stick with meditation on the couch or your bed. Yes, meditation. Play some calming music and try to relax. Just five minutes of quiet mindfulness can do wonders for concentration, improve sleep, breathing, and focus throughout the day. Stretching and yoga can also quiet the mind, as well as improve blood flow and energy.


Have a book you’ve just been DYING to read but haven’t had the time to? Now is your chance to make some time! I think we can all agree that reading for pleasure is much more gratifying than reading by requirement. We have so much "required" reading in our daily lives; homework, the newspaper, traffic signs, emails, and bills. Blah! No, thanks. Taking the time to read a book YOU want to read gives you an escape from the stress of everyday life. Just by opening the book you allow yourself to be invited into a literary world that distracts you from your daily stressors. Reading can even relax your body by lowering your heart rate and easing the tension in your muscles. A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. It works better and faster than other relaxation methods, such as listening to music or drinking a hot cup of tea. Here’s a thought, make yourself a cup of tea, grab your favorite book, and find a comfy spot around the house. Now that’s total relaxation!


I think it’s time for a POWER NAP! Let’s be real, sleep deprived you isn’t the best you. Coffee and energy drinks can only go so far. They may even give you the jitters and make your mind think its training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We want you to restore your alertness, enhance your performance, and reduce your mistakes. That’s why it is suggested that you take a 20 to 30-minute power nap midday; that way you aren’t interrupting your sleep schedule. A nap can be a pleasant luxury, a mini vacation, if you will. It can provide an easy way to get some relaxation and rejuvenation. With all that being said, I think I hear your bed calling your name…
