Last Minute Summer Trip Ideas

August 13, 2019

I know you don't want to hear it. But summer is coming to an end. However, there's still time to fit in a last-minute trip or two to make the most of your summer! Don't waste away the last beautiful August weekends before the cool weather takes over. Pack up your kids and visit one of the following stops!

 1. Mackinac Island

Hop on a ferry and enjoy a couple of days surrounded by water, horses, and no cars. It may look small, but there's plenty for you and your family to do here!

Spend an afternoon browsing through local shops or go back in time at Fort Mackinac and learn about the island's history. You can rent bikes and take a day trip going around the island and see many natural phenomena such as Arch Rock. Don't forget to taste the fudge!

2. Tahquamenon Falls

Don't just stop at the bridge! Check out the upper peninsula and make sure you stop by this natural beauty. You'll want to pack tennis shoes, water bottles, snacks, and your swimsuit for this trip.

There is one upper and one lower waterfall. The upper falls are the main attraction showing off a huge waterfall. Whereas the lower falls is one small waterfall and rapids where tourists can be seen swimming in at their own risk.

3. Sleeping Bear Dunes

Another gorgeous nature stop in Northern Michigan. Get ready for breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Michigan and giant sand dunes! You'll have to take a hike to see the view but it's more than worth it! After, you can spend time relaxing at the beach and swimming in the bluest parts of the lake.

Need a break from the sun? Stop by the local town for a bite to eat and some shopping!

4. Detroit

Not an outdoorsy family? No problem! Head over to Detroit where you can visit museums and the riverfront, and see concerts and sporting events. There's always something going on in this city so make sure you take a look at an events calendar before heading out.

Detroit is filled with many unique places to eat, come prepared with an empty stomach. You can plan out your trip beforehand or just go with the flow!

5. Headlands International Dark Sky Park

See the night sky like never before! The Dark Sky Park limits the amount of light pollution in the area to have the clearest view of the sky. On a clear night, you'll be able to see the stars and moon shining bright. The next meteor shower will peak between August 12-13, the perfect time to visit!
