Although Michigan is beautiful in the fall, the season after that is not so wonderful to a lot of people who have to live in the cold. The days are shorter, you don't want to go outside, there are bad drivers everywhere, and did I mention that it's cold? How can you get out of that funk you're feeling in the winter? Hygge.
What is hygge? Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of contentment and wellness. Hygge creates well-being, connection, and warmth, and is a feeling of belonging to the moment. You've probably have practiced hygge without even realizing it!
Here are some ways you can practice hygge:
Get comfortable by wearing loungewear - Sweatpants, fuzzy socks, soft sweatshirts, etc.
Light some of your favorite candles, and if you have a fireplace, turn that on as well!
Get under some warm and chunky blankets - an electric blanket is a MUST if you love being warm.
Make yourself a warm beverage - hot cocoa, tea, coffee, you name it. The warm beverage will get you warm in no time.
Live in the present - Get off your phone, avoid watching television, and going on your laptop. What are some things you can do without your devices? Read a book or magazine, journal, draw, knit, hang out with friends and family, or try out a new recipe that you've been wanting to make.
Hearty comfy food - Pasta and soup are warm, delicious, and can get you into a comfortable mood. Making homemade food for yourself, or for you and your loved ones is always a good idea. Or if you're feeling lazy, you can take out soup from Uncle Cheetah's Soup Shop, or take out pasta from Brick Road Pizza Co.
