Top 5 Questions to Ask Before Buying Your Dream Home

Buying your new dream home can seem intimidating, and is a huge investment in your future. While looking at homes it is easy to lose sight of what you really want. Ask yourself these simple questions before starting the search.

Question Number 1: What will my future look like?

Buying a house is a long term investment, and it is important to buy a home that will not only meet your short term needs, but also your long term needs. For example, a one bedroom house may fit the life you have now, but in five years will you want to have more bedrooms for kids? If you are looking for a home to retire in, will I be able to climb up a flight of stares to my bedroom, or should the master be on the first floor? It is important to take into how your life will change in the coming years, and what a house needs to have to accommodate your needs.

Question Number 2: What do I really need?

Make a list of wants and needs to know what is important for you. Prioritize what is important for you. You may want a pool, however is that more important than an attached garage? Is it more important to you to have a short commute or have larger home? By ranking what is most important to you, it will become easier to see what home best fits your needs.

Question Number 3: How much can I spend?

Knowing how much you can spend on your future home is vital to know before searching for homes. Being pre-approved for your mortgage can leave one less thing you have to worry about when buying a home. Knowing details for various mortgage plans before you buy can help you better plan for the life you will have when you are in your new home.

Question Number 4: What can I change?

It is easy to get caught up on the minor cosmetic detail of a home, however most things can be changed. For example: the house may have bright pink walls in the living room, but that can be easily changed with a fresh coat of paint. It is important to not get caught up on the details of the home that you can change, and concentrate on the details that cannot be changed. You can replace the carpeting with hardwood floors, but you cannot move the location neighborhood the house is in.

Question Number 5: Do I have effective communication with my real estate agent?

Now that you have answered the questions above, it is important to communicate these with your realtor. The biggest asset in the home buying process is your realtor, and they want you to be in the home of your dreams too. Make sure you are on the same page, open communication is important to make sure they are showing you the homes that meet your priorities. Feel free to reach out to realtors and ask questions no matter what stage you are in at the buying process.
